Mining facilities rely on vibrating screens for many mineral-stream processing roles. Somehow, the oscillating frames fold multiple duties into their workaholic frames. Vibrating decks sift and sort, separate and grade. Equipment manufacturers can even add dewatering functionality by furnishing the frames with a high ingress protection rating. Versatile indeed, let’s tear one down to see what makes it tick.
Giving the Tear Down A Fair Shake
Right from the get-go, this is no ordinary metal framework. The machine-welded box components are tough and stress-relieved. Given this degree of structural robustness, the modular constructs still break down quickly for transport. Huck-style lock-bolts further enhance this feature. Different types of screening media swap out effortlessly when this type of panel mounting system is utilized. Deeper inside the vibratory apparatus, it’s harder to see what’s going on. Fortunately, there are access plates to allow operators to modify the screening stroke.
Accessing the Vibratory Apparatus
Packed with grease, a single or dual-mounted shaft pulls into focus. The fully machined shaft exhibits dedicated stem and spindle power transmitting eccentricities. Combined with single or two-mass drive weights, plus a matching number of system counterweights, the offset-excited drive sheaves impart lift and “shake” to the vibrating screen’s drive stroke. Working in concert with this effect, steel-tempered springs absorb the stroke energy so that the machine frame doesn’t tear itself loose from its moorings.
Filling In the Process Screening Blanks
Selected as woven wire mesh sieves or solid panel of polyurethane, the screens are loaded with specially profiled grain sorting apertures. A quick-release mechanism holds this major component in place. Metal strips, each specially pre-tensioned are fitted to either side of the screens. At either end of the frame, although this linkage is sometimes connected to the centre of the screen media, mechanical power transmitting tie-ins provide sorting and sifting kinetic energy. Actually, if the screening panel is long enough or wide enough, expect two or three of these vibrational armatures to be fitted. If a screening stroke does become imbalanced, a quick look at these linkages should be performed first, for one of them could be malfunctioning.
In high-end screening decks, there’s room for more system flexibility. A mounting system for spray tubes and nozzles could be in the mix. If the screens require a dewatering feature, then the function is provisionally included. Undersize and oversize sorting pans, inclination adjusting systems, stroke amplitude adjusters and more, plus a second or third deck screen mounting framework, the vibrating equipment is loaded with key components. From the central heavy gauge steel frame to the mountable and demountable accessories, screening decks are incredibly configurable and load-versatile pieces of technology.
